Rachel’s Story

I was in a serious car accident in 2004. I no longer knew how to work with my body. Without taking the time to pause, I pivoted from my full time training and lifelong dream of being a ballet dancer to a new university program and then to grad school right away. While I tried different modalities to address my injuries, nothing worked so I thrust myself into a rigorous daily yoga practice. Looking back, this wasn’t doing anything to heal my body, but rather increased injury. About three months before I was set to begin acupuncture school, I injured my hip. I ended up having surgery a month into my program. When my exhaustion and burnout finally got so bad that I needed a summer off, I developed appendicitis three days in and spent the two months off recovering from surgery. In my last term, I was hired in a full-time position and I balanced the long work weeks with endless hours of studying for my licensing exams. I lived in a state of exhaustion, pain and stress.

Since then, I have started listening to the whispers of my body’s wisdom. I’ve taken the time to acknowledge what my body and my mind need. Working 60+ hour weeks doesn’t make me better or stronger than anyone else. I have prioritized self-care and healing myself on a deep level with a strong focus on restoring my nervous system. I have learned to listen to the messages that my body was trying to tell me all along. Because our bodies know and they tell us. And yet we are so good at ignoring and pushing past.”
